Chemnitz (dpa / sn) - The city of Chemnitz has banned a demonstration planned for Saturday by opponents of the Corona measures.

The group “Chemnitz stands up” had registered a rally with up to 5000 participants at the Karl Marx Monument.

This violates the applicable regulations to contain the corona pandemic, as a spokesman explained on Thursday at a dpa request.

He referred to the continued high level of infection in the city.

According to Saxony's Corona Protection Ordinance, open-air gatherings are currently only allowed stationary with a maximum of 1000 participants.

If the weekly incidence of 200 is exceeded for several days in a row in a district or an independent city, the number is limited to a maximum of 200 participants.

In Chemnitz, the rate of new infections has been above this value for a long time.

The organizers of the protest had already announced in advance that they would exhaust all legal remedies against a ban.

Just last week, similar gatherings were banned in Dresden and this was confirmed by the Higher Administrative Court.

The police then enforced the ban on Saturday with a large contingent.

The alliance “Chemnitz stands up” had already wanted to hold a larger rally in downtown Chemnitz at the end of March, which the city had banned at the time due to the high incidence of infections.

This ban had also been upheld by the courts.

Nevertheless, there were gatherings in the city center, and according to the police, in one case suspected right-wing extremists also attacked police officers.
