Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU) expects corona vaccinations to be released for all those willing to vaccinate in Germany by June at the latest.

At the moment he is assuming "that we can lift the prioritization in June," said Spahn on Thursday in the Federal Council in Berlin.

He would be happy if it was possible earlier, added Spahn.

In May, it will be the turn of priority group three for vaccinations, said Spahn.

Then "many professional groups" would be added to those entitled to vaccinate.

The minister expressed himself in a debate in the regional chamber on the revision of the Infection Protection Act.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health, more than 17.9 million people in Germany had received at least one vaccination by Wednesday.

Accordingly, 5.7 million people were fully vaccinated - that corresponds to 6.9 percent of the total population.

In the Federal Council, Spahn pointed out the successes of the previous vaccination campaign, especially in nursing homes.

Currently, only three percent of all new infections are recorded in nursing homes;

before the start of the vaccination campaign, it was 50 percent.

The first partial steps to cancel the prioritization had recently already been taken in individual federal states.

For example, Bavaria released the AstraZeneca vaccine in medical practices on Wednesday for all age groups.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony had previously made the same decision.

The only way to break the wave is with vaccinations and tests, warns Spahn

Due to the very rare occurrence of blood clots (thrombosis), the AstraZeneca vaccine in Germany has generally only been used in people over 60 since March 31.

Under 60-year-olds can continue to be vaccinated with it "at the discretion of the doctor and with an individual risk analysis after careful explanation".

Despite the imminent lifting of the vaccination prioritization, Spahn emphasized the need for further restrictions on contact. The CDU politician in the Federal Council warned that you cannot test against the third wave of the corona pandemic and also not vaccinate. Even a higher vaccination rate in Germany would not break the third wave.
