Straubing (dpa / lsw) - The playoff quarter-final series of title favorite Adler Mannheim goes into a playoff on Saturday.

With the 3: 1 (3: 0, 0: 0, 0: 1) at the Straubing Tigers, the best preliminary round team in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) avoided a surprisingly early end on Thursday evening.

The Mannheim team impressively equalized the series after the 2: 3 after extra time in the first game on Tuesday.

Without the injured striker David Wolf, who will also be out of the World Cup in Riga (May 21 to June 6), the Adler made everything clear with three goals in the first ten minutes.

Mannheim had lost seven of the previous eight guest appearances in Lower Bavaria.

The decisive third quarter-finals on Saturday will now take place in Mannheim again.

The semi-finals will begin next Monday and will also only be played in "best-of-three" mode.

This means that, unlike in normal seasons, only two wins instead of four are necessary to advance.

The season, which is heavily influenced by the coronavirus pandemic, will take place this time much shorter and in a different mode.
