On March 4, the government decided to give municipalities the opportunity to issue regulations banning staying in certain public places, a measure to reduce the spread of infection.

The City of Gothenburg City Council voted on Thursday through the municipal board's proposal that 18 places in Gothenburg can now be covered by the residence ban.

The municipal board had a consensus on the proposal, but chairman Axel Josefson (M) believes that the decisions to ban stays will not be taken lightly.

"Serious restriction"

- It is a serious restriction on the freedom of Gothenburgers and there are conditions that must be met for it to be possible to make a decision on a ban, says the municipal board chairman.

The municipal board cannot make the decision itself, but must first consult infection control about the situation.

With the measure, the municipality hopes to be able to reduce the spread of infection that can occur in public places during holidays and hot days.

There are five parks, seven bathing areas and eleven play and activity areas.

Preparing for the holidays

For the chairman of the municipal board, Axel Josefson, it was important that the ordinance was in place before the Valborg weekend.

But Josefson emphasizes that the residence ban is a complement to the fight against the virus, which will be used sparingly.

Where should Gothenburgers go if a residence ban will apply?

- I fully understand that it can be difficult, but the stay ban is based entirely on how the pandemic develops and how the infection situation is in Gothenburg.

- You apply to places where there is not such a large spread of infection.

The ordinance on residence bans applies until 30 September 2021 at the latest.
