Schwerin (dpa / mv) - For around 5500 high school students, the written Abitur exams in English begin this Friday. Education Minister Bettina Martin (SPD) made it clear on Thursday that there is no compulsory corona test before the start of the exam. The new Federal Infection Protection Act does not provide for that. However, the pupils are called upon to carry out a voluntary self-test before the exams, which is available at all schools. If such a test turns out positive, the person concerned is not allowed to take part in the test that day and must have the result clarified with a PCR test. According to the minister, the examination would then have to be completed at a post-registration date.

Students must wear a mouth and nose covering during the several hours of written exams.

You will be given half an hour more than usual to complete the task.

Minister Martin said that this was a response to a request made by the state student council.

To maintain the minimum corona distance, the tables are at least 1.50 meters apart.

Further written, transnational Abitur exams in French (Wednesday) and German (Friday) will follow in the coming week.

The start of the Abitur exams had been postponed by ten days in order to give the students more time to prepare in the corona pandemic.

Next week, the central written exams for secondary school will begin for around 6,100 pupils.

The graduating classes were also offered face-to-face lessons during the corona-related school closings in order to prepare for the exams.

Martin emphasized: "In contrast to other grades, the graduating classes had face-to-face classes throughout this school year, except for three days before and five days after the Christmas break."
