German police said that Schalke 04 players were attacked by a group of fans after their relegation from the Bundesliga football league on Tuesday evening.

"There are players who have fled," a police spokesman said on Wednesday.

He reported that two players were kicked while other fans threw eggs and chanted insults.

Schalke lost 1-0 to Armenia Belved on Tuesday, to confirm his descent, and the fans confronted him while returning to Gelsenkirchen.

Schalke stated that there had been a confrontation where "unknown individuals crossed the indisputable boundaries".

"Despite our understanding of the frustration and anger at our relegation ... the club cannot accept the physical danger to our players and our coaching staff," he added.

It is noteworthy that Schalke reached the semi-finals of the 2010-2011 European Champions League and managed to qualify for the price of the final of the continental competition, seasons 2018-2019, 2014-2015, 2013-2014 and 2012-2013.
