Hamburg (dpa) - With more than 50 tractors, farmers demonstrated on Wednesday in Hamburg against a possible opening of the Old South Elbe to the tidal Elbe.

In the course of measures against the silting up of the port, consideration is being given, among other things, to the opening of the old arm of the Elbe.

"Not with us" or "No opening" could be read on posters on the tractors that rolled in a convoy from Neuenfelde over the Köhlbrand Bridge to Jungfernstieg.

A police spokeswoman said the demonstration only caused slight adverse effects on traffic.

The protesters handed over 28,000 signatures to the Vice President of the Hamburg Parliament, André Trepoll (CDU).

The CDU parliamentary group said they wanted an immediate end to the red-green opening plans around the Alte Süderelbe and wanted to introduce a corresponding application to the citizenry on Wednesday.

The risks are greater than the benefits.

"The greatest dangers lie in the penetration of toxic substances and the rising water level associated with the opening," it said.

The CDU fears the bankruptcy of a number of companies in the Altes Land, which would then no longer be able to fall back on natural water resources.

The SPD parliamentary group emphasized that so far there has only been one review process.

It is an allegation to pretend that the opening of the southern Elbe has already been decided.
