Düsseldorf / Berlin (dpa / lnw) - The North Rhine-Westphalian CDU is setting the course for the successor to state party leader Armin Laschet, but has not yet looked into the cards with its top personalities.

"After the decision to run for chancellor, we will discuss all the necessary steps for the CDU North Rhine-Westphalia in the responsible bodies," said the Secretary General of the NRW CDU, Josef Hovenjürgen, on Wednesday at the request of the German Press Agency in Düsseldorf.

"I am confident that we will do this by mutual agreement."

North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul, who is considered a promising candidate for the state party chairmanship, also emphasized after the Berlin battle over the K question: “The past few weeks should be a lesson for all of us. We will now discuss the personnel issue in North Rhine-Westphalia and resolve it by consensus. " He was very confident that this would succeed by the summer holidays, he told the dpa.

The party congress of the CDU state association with the largest number of members with the overdue board elections was postponed indefinitely last year due to corona.

In May, the state executive board will discuss both the state party congress and a date for choosing the state list for the federal election, announced Hovenjürgen.

“We hope to be able to hold both events in person”.

However, "all conceivable options" are being prepared.

So far, Laschet has not answered the question of how long he wants to hold on to the Prime Minister's office and the CDU chairmanship in North Rhine-Westphalia at the same time as the Union's candidate for chancellor.

In the follow-up speculations, Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst (45) is currently named as the only possible candidate for both positions.

In CDU leadership circles there are reportedly also considerations, Wüst - should he inherit Laschet as head of government in the current legislative period - to put a person with high authority in the party as a counterweight.

For this option, Reul is considered the first choice.

The 68-year-old was Secretary General of the NRW CDU from 1991 to 2003.
