Poggendorf (dpa / mv) - Eight days after the fatal accident with an electric car near Poggendorf (Western Pomerania-Rügen), the identity of the dead driver has been clarified.

As a police spokeswoman said on Wednesday in Stralsund, it was the 56-year-old owner of the Tesla, a businessman from Schwerin.

That was the result of the DNA analysis.

According to the public prosecutor's office, the exact cause of the accident is no longer clarified.

On April 13, the Tesla had turned left on the straight road on the federal highway 194 between Poggendorf and Loitz, hit a tree and went up in flames.

According to the public prosecutor's office, it is not clear why the driver turned left with a car worth around 85,000 euros.

"Ultimately, the driver was responsible for the incident," said a spokesman for the prosecutor.

Since there was no evidence of third party involvement in the accident, the death investigation will now be completed.

Only the driver's remains were found in the completely burned-out car.

First aiders could no longer approach the car because of the enormous heat, and fire extinguishers did not help either.

Only then could the fire brigade extinguish the fire.
