A car owner in Robetsfors municipality has been fined heavily for not moving his 80 scrap cars from his farm.

And in Norsjö municipality, efforts have also been made to clean up private car cemeteries by private individuals.

Last year, they managed to collect just over 100 cars thanks to the fact that it became free to scrap their cars.

- Yes, we must probably say that it was a success.

We had counted on about 200 cars and we managed to collect just over half, says Martine Westerlund who is the coordinator in Norsjö municipality.

Can be recycled

The car manufacturers have a producer responsibility and allocate money to the common unit called Bilretur, which is the manufacturers' network for handling the end-of-life car.

Via Bilretur you can find the nearest car assembly to leave the car for recycling.

In Norsjö, it was Stena Recycling that helped collect the cars.

Previous efforts have been made in both Storuman and Arvidsjaur.

- The requirement is that vital parts of the car must remain for us to recycle it and then the car owner can hand it in free of charge, says Jan-Erik Johansson who is branch manager in Piteå.

Campaign continues

Martine Westerlund hopes that the collection in Norsjö municipality can continue until all the cars that have been mapped have been collected.

- When we have been helped to clean up our municipal parts, we can all be proud of our beautiful countryside, says Martine Westerlund.
