Berlin (AP) - Hundreds of people protest in the capital against the corona policy.

More and more demonstrators gathered on the Strasse des 17. Juni on Wednesday morning while the Bundestag was discussing the amended Infection Protection Act.

The police spoke of a number of participants in the lower four-digit range, and more demonstrators streamed in.

The police are deployed with a large number of around 2,200 officers. The Reichstag building and the Brandenburg Gate were cordoned off over a large area. Water cannons are ready and can be used "if necessary," said a police spokesman. Police officers with dogs stood near the demonstrators. Officers on horses were also seen. The Berlin police are supported by the federal police and officials from several federal states.

Protesters chanted shouts like “Peace, freedom, no dictatorship”.

A poster read: "No to the Citizens' Empowerment Act".

Whistles and drums could be heard.

The police repeatedly called for compliance with the corona hygiene rules via loudspeaker.

There have been some temporary arrests for not wearing mouth and nose protection, police said.

There have been nationwide calls on the Internet to travel to Berlin and take to the streets there.

Several demonstrations against the corona infection protection measures were registered for Wednesday around the government district.

Four of them have been banned, said a police spokesman.

Among them is therefore also an elevator that was originally supposed to take place near the bank of the Reichstag with 2000 participants.

In the afternoon a demonstration was supposed to start near Bellevue Palace.
