The rising star of progressives in the US Congress Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other elected Democrats on Tuesday called Joe Biden to go "further" against the "climate crisis" than his already titanic investment promises, by presenting again their “Green New Deal” environmental plan.

"The climate crisis […] was born out of injustice, […] born of the search for profit at all costs, human and ecological", launched the young elected representative of New York, during a press conference in Washington .

At her side, the progressive senator Ed Markey had, already with her, presented in February 2019 for the first time their "Green New Deal", an environmental plan aimed at reducing the carbon emissions of the United States to zero in one. decade, thanks to drastic actions which would suppose a profound transformation of the economy.

Then as now, this plan had almost no chance of being adopted in Congress for lack of sufficient support.

The fight for the environment in the foreground

But in two years, the situation and consciousness have changed, said Senator Markey.

In the first place, the arrival at the White House of Joe Biden, who has placed the fight against climate change at the heart of his gigantic project of more than 2,000 billion dollars of investment in infrastructure.

This plan is the subject of bitter negotiations in Congress.

General Motors, one of the largest car manufacturers in the world, "intends to produce only electric vehicles by 2035".

"It was not on the table two years ago, the Biden administration includes climate action, environmental justice […] in its recovery plan, this is the DNA of our 'Green New Deal'" , listed the senator from Massachusetts.

"We must go further"

"The amount already included in the projects of the Biden administration so far is commendable but we must go further, and in a bolder way," said Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

You have to "think big, act hard," added Ed Markey.

No date for a vote has been set.

And Republicans are fiercely opposed to the "Green New Deal".

It would "destroy our economy," tweeted House Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday.

Progressives have chosen a week marked by Earth Day, this Thursday, to step up the pressure on Joe Biden.

The latter is organizing an international climate summit on Thursday and Friday.
