Passau (dpa / lby) - The city of Passau is making particularly fast progress with corona vaccinations in a Bavaria-wide comparison.

According to the city administration, more than 40 percent of all residents aged 16 and over have now been vaccinated at least once.

As of Wednesday, the rate of the first vaccinated was 40.15 percent - almost twice as high as the Bavarian average.

According to the Robert Koch Institute on Wednesday, the vaccination rate in the Free State was 21.4 percent.

"That's a very nice thing," said Passau's mayor Jürgen Dupper (SPD).

"If things continue like this, we would be in a good position in the summer."

As of Wednesday, only 14 of all registered vaccinees over 60 years of age had not yet received a first dose.

After they have been vaccinated, the city says it wants to start “free vaccination” without prioritization.

The fact that the first vaccination rate is so high is mainly due to the early start of vaccination at the end of December and extra deliveries of vaccine to the border regions, said Dupper.

In other municipalities close to the border, such as the Upper Palatinate district of Tirschenreuth, the vaccination rate is above the Bavaria-wide average.

The Passau vaccination center had to close for two days this week due to a lack of vaccine, said Duppert.

«It is our urgent expectation that we can continue at the current pace.

But we are still longingly waiting for the announced vaccination turbo. "
