Höxter (dpa / lnw) - marching, sport, target practice and spending the night in the field - basic military training has started for 18 prospective soldiers in Höxter.

In the end, the men between the ages of 17 and 27 are reservists in homeland security in the Bundeswehr and will be deployed at locations in North Rhine-Westphalia from September.

On Tuesday, the Bundeswehr presented the project in the General Weber barracks in the Weserbergland as part of a media day.

"What is new is that the presence phase is merged with the reservist phase," said Lieutenant Colonel and press spokesman Stefan Heydt.

Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU) wants to use the offer to provide additional workers for crisis and disaster operations in Germany, as they are currently needed in the corona pandemic. The motto of the service is “Your year for Germany”.

For this purpose, according to Heydt, the participants have been given traditional military training since April 6th.

And that nationwide in eleven barracks.

This is followed by special training at three locations in Berlin, Wildflecken (Bavaria) and Delmenhorst (Lower Saxony).

This is followed by further training over three weeks in the respective state commandos.

In North Rhine-Westphalia there are homeland security companies in Düsseldorf (Rhineland), Unna (Ruhr area) and Augustdorf (Westphalia).

Here the soldiers learn special knowledge about the region, such as critical infrastructure and cooperation with civil authorities.

“The soldiers are only deployed regionally.

They cannot be moved and a stay abroad is also out of the question, ”says Heydt.

In September, 80 reservists in NRW are to begin their five-month service over six years.

Like other soldiers, they could then be used in vaccination centers or in emergencies such as floods, storms or heavy snowfall, as was the case last in February.
