April 21, 2021 Russian police searched premises in St. Petersburg related to the opponent Aleksei Navalny. Before planned demonstrations in support of Navalny took place, some of his supporters reported that "allies" of the opponent were also arrested.

Russian police arrested his ally Lyubov Sobol, a lawyer from the Anti-Corruption Foundation, and spokeswoman Kira Yarmish. This was announced by the independent observer Ovd-Info, explaining that the police conducted raids in various locations in Russia and made several arrests before the pro Navalny demonstrations scheduled for today.

According to the NGO Ovd-Info, other searches took place in at least 20 Russian cities between Tuesday and Wednesday, including St. Petersburg, the second in the country where the largest opposition demonstrations usually take place since Moscow.

The demonstrations scheduled for today in support of Navalny take place on the same day as President Vladimir Putin's grand annual speech in front of both houses of parliament. The previous protest movement, after Navalny's arrest in January, resulted in more than 11,000 arrests.
