Hanover (dpa) - For the time being, the last time an aircraft is supposed to bring people in need of protection from Greek refugee camps to Germany this Thursday.

About a year ago, on April 18, 2019, 47 children and young people landed for the first time from the hopelessly overcrowded Greek refugee camps on the Aegean islands of Samos, Chios and Lesbos.

Lower Saxony Interior Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) said that it was possible to get almost 3,000 people out of the miserable conditions in the camps on the Greek islands: “Germany should take the lead on this issue, especially in view of the current circumstances in the camps, especially after the devastating one Fire last September, "said Pistorius of the German press agency.

Germany took in the vast majority of the people brought from the Greek islands.

Pistorius emphasized that this fact would have to play a role in Germany's further engagement.

"It is now important not only to do something yourself, but also to remind the other European countries of their humanitarian obligations."
