(Fighting New Coronary Pneumonia) Large-scale new crown vaccination accelerates virus mutation?

Experts: lack of scientific basis

China News Service, Beijing, April 21 (Reporter Li Chun) On the 21st, the Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism of the State Council of China held a press conference on the new crown vaccination situation.

When asked how to evaluate the statement that "large-scale new crown vaccination accelerates virus mutation," Shao Yiming, a member of the expert group of the scientific research group vaccine research and development team, said that this lacks scientific basis.

Some foreign media reported that the large-scale global promotion of new crown vaccination may accelerate the virus's mutation and the occurrence of a virus immune escape response, which will result in the new crown virus becoming more infectious and more toxic, and there is no effective response.

Shao Yiming responded to this at the meeting, saying that this statement should lack scientific basis.

"Virus mutation is an eternal theme, especially mRNA viruses. The basis of its mutation is that the virus will continue to replicate. As an acute infectious disease of the new crown, the entire course of the disease is only a few weeks. If you want to continue to replicate, you must cycle from the infected person. To spread the earth to the susceptible is to be popular, if it is not popular, there will be no chance to copy it, and then it will not spread."

Shao Yiming said that in this sense, two measures are needed to stop the epidemic, namely, public health measures and the use of vaccines.

"The vaccine can block the spread of the virus. The virus cannot replicate when it does not spread. If it cannot replicate, it will not produce more mutant strains. In this case, the vaccine will definitely play a positive role and will not promote the emergence of more mutant strains. ."

He further explained that even if there is no vaccine, after the virus infects the human body, the immune system will produce immune pressure against the virus, which will lead to the emergence of mutant strains; but if the vaccine is vaccinated in advance, then it will have basic immunity, and the virus will come in again. The virus will be suppressed in a large amount, and a stronger immune response will be produced, the virus will replicate less, and the chance of mutation will be less.

"Through the widespread promotion of vaccines, we can still buy time for future viruses to mutate, so that our companies and R&D institutions can study a new generation of vaccines against mutant strains in response to the emergence of mutations." Shao Yiming said, vaccines are absolutely possible. Prevent the emergence of mutant strains, rather than promote its emergence.
