Berlin (dpa) - The deputy CDU leader Julia Klöckner has proposed a joint "decision-making council" of the CDU and CSU as a consequence of the internal power struggle for the candidacy for chancellor.

Such a committee could be used, for example, for joint candidate searches and election programs, such as in the European elections in 2024, Klöckner told the German Press Agency in Berlin on Wednesday.

"That would give the members and everyone involved clarity."

After days of bitter power struggle for the Union's candidacy for chancellor, CDU chairman Armin Laschet prevailed against CSU boss Markus Söder on Tuesday.

Klöckner is chairwoman of the Rhineland-Palatinate CDU.

There was also great support for Söder in the regional executive committee there and among the district chairmen.

Klöckner, who had supported Laschet, now said: "The decision-making processes for the nomination of the CDU and CSU candidate for chancellor have challenged our party members."

There is no clear, no orderly procedure as to how the sister parties determine their candidate for chancellor.

"If the board of the CDU decides something different than the board of the CSU, then there will be a long struggle."

The Union should learn from this for the future, demanded Klöckner.

"We need a joint decision-making council from the CDU and CSU, for questions that affect both sister parties, so that situations do not proceed and our parties are not put to the test beyond measure."

It is clear: "The Union only has maximum strength and persuasive power if, as a sister party, it does not take energy from each other, but supports each other together and adds up their skills."
