Schwerin (dpa / mv) - In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, fewer babies saw the light of day in 2020 than in previous years.

According to preliminary data from the State Statistical Office on Wednesday, 12,600 children were born in the northeast.

This is the lowest level since 2013, when 12,560 babies were born in MV.

Then the number rose to over 13,000 for four years before dropping to 12,630 in 2019.

The number of births in 2020 is even below the forecast of the population forecast by the state government up to 2040, which in its middle of three scenarios assumed 12,745 births for 2020.

After that, fewer and fewer babies will see the light of day in MV in the coming years because there are fewer women of the appropriate age.

The prognosis for the year 2025 assumes only 11,553 births.

For the year 2040, experts expect slightly more than 13,000 births for the first time.

According to the forecast, the population of the country is expected to decrease from around 1.6 million to 1.53 million by 2040.
