Gießen (dpa) - The trial of two defendants who are said to have kidnapped and killed a man almost five years ago has started before the Gießen regional court.

To this day, the body of the missing Hanauer has not been found despite extensive investigations that led as far as Bavaria to Lake Starnberg.

At the beginning of the trial on Wednesday, the 44-year-old defendant announced a testimony.

The other, a 40-year-old, “does not want to provide any information at the moment,” as his defense lawyer said.

The public prosecutor's office accuses the two men of murder and extortionate kidnapping with fatal consequences.

They are said to have kidnapped the 39-year-old in November 2016 to extort ransom.

The prosecution assumes that the monetary claim was no longer made in the end.

The victim was therefore killed by several shots in the head and upper body.

The body is said to have been dismembered and the remains buried in the forest and sunk in deep water.

The district court is expected to hear the case for several months.

So far, meetings are planned until September.
