Hamburg (dpa / lno) - Commerzbank in Hamburg increased the number of its private and corporate customers in the Corona year 2020 by 7,800 to 425,000.

Many people used the time during the restrictions caused by the pandemic, checked their banking transactions and used the option of a free current account, said Christian Hassel, the divisional director for private and business customers in Hamburg.

The Hamburger Sparkasse (Haspa), the top dog in the Hanseatic city, has just under 959,000 private current account holders.

Like many other banks, Commerzbank also wants to close branches, a good half of its around 1000 branches nationwide. It is not yet clear to what extent Hamburg and the metropolitan region will be affected. Nationwide, customers are to receive personal advice on simple banking transactions at around 450 locations, and questions about complex financing are to be answered at 220 of these locations. In addition to Commerzbank, Deutsche Bank, Haspa and Hamburger Volksbank want or have closed branches.

In the Corona year 2020, Commerzbank in Hamburg granted companies KfW loans amounting to 492 million euros; 358 million euros have actually been called up so far.

At the same time, customers would have bought more securities.

The deposit volume increased by 8.4 percent to around eight billion euros.

In the corporate and private customer business, the corona pandemic has also accelerated the trend towards digitization.

Commerzbank Hamburg also recorded strong growth in real estate financing.

In the past year, new business increased by 12.2 percent to 1.2 billion euros compared to 2019.

The total volume is now 6.4 billion euros.
