Frankfurt / Main (dpa) - The Hessian chemical and pharmaceutical industry is pushing for faster corona vaccinations in companies by company doctors.

"We want to vaccinate earlier than in June," said Dirk Meyer, chief executive of the HessenChemie employers' association, on Wednesday in Frankfurt.

"Every day counts."

However, there was no approval of state politicians or vaccine deliveries.

Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) had announced that company doctors would be involved in the vaccination campaign from June. From the point of view of the Association of the Chemical Industry (VCI) Hessen, things are going faster. "A number of companies are ready and want to vaccinate," said CEO Jochen Reutter. He referred to the Höchst industrial park in Frankfurt, the chemical company Evonik in Hanau and the pharmaceutical and medical supplies manufacturer B. Braun in Melsungen. The companies have experience with flu vaccinations. "The large network of company doctors in our company is ready to accelerate the speed of the vaccination campaign," said Marcus Kuhnert, Vice Chairman of the VCI Hessen and CFO at Merck.

The Hessian chemical and pharmaceutical industry is now recovering from the Corona crisis.

Production in the chemical industry in January was 2.3 percent and in the pharmaceutical industry 2.9 percent above the previous year, said Reutter.

While sales in the chemical industry rose only slightly, they grew in the pharmaceutical industry by more than 9 percent.

Reutter spoke of a “cautious confidence” for the industry with more than 61,000 employees in the country.

The corona crisis remains a major risk.

Last year, the pandemic hit Hessian chemistry hard.

In spite of a strong recovery, sales in the cyclical sector fell by 7 percent from autumn onwards.

The pharmaceutical companies, on the other hand, did good business: Revenues rose sharply by 8.3 percent.

The bottom line was that total sales in the industry fell by 0.6 percent year-on-year to EUR 27.5 billion.
