Nyon (AP) - UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has welcomed the withdrawal of the English clubs from the planned Super League and is hoping for long-term cooperation with the top football clubs.

"I said yesterday that it was admirable to admit a mistake and these clubs made a big mistake," said the Slovenian.

"But they are now back in line and I know that they have a lot to offer not only to our competitions, but to the entire European game," emphasized the 53-year-old.

On the night of April 21st, after massive pressure from fans and the public, all six English teams around champions FC Liverpool announced that they were not establishing a closed elite league in competition with the UEFA Champions League.

The withdrawal should also be imminent at Inter Milan, FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.

Only from the original initiators Juventus Turin and Real Madrid as well as from AC Milan have there been no publicly expressed tendencies to abandon the highly controversial project.

Ceferin apparently wants to refrain from direct consequences for the discerning deviants.

"The most important thing now is that we carry on, rebuild the unity that we enjoyed the game before and move forward together," said the head of the Football Association.

As a threatening backdrop, he had previously brought into play an exclusion from the ongoing European Cup season and an EM and World Cup ban for all club professionals.

The twelve top European clubs had announced the establishment of a billion-dollar Super League.

This would have been in direct competition with the Champions League of the European Football Union UEFA.

No club from the Bundesliga had joined the Super League.

The billion-dollar project was to be financed by a major US bank.
