Kiel (dpa / lno) - The Kiel district court found a 21-year-old defendant guilty on Wednesday for an unauthorized car race in downtown Kiel and negligent bodily harm.

The young man, who is in training, has to surrender his driver's license and may not apply for a new one before 20 months have elapsed, said district judge Myriam Wolf.

In addition, the man has to pay 600 euros - this corresponds to his current monthly net remuneration - to a compensation fund for traffic accident victims.

The verdict is not yet legally binding.

The defense attorney announced a complaint against the driving license revocation and appeal.

In the act on May 11, 2020, the defendant - according to witnesses closely followed by another vehicle - sped almost four kilometers through the city in his father's 450 hp vehicle.

He ran over a red light, crashed into a local bus and knocked down a metal bollard and a street sign.

The bus driver was injured.

He said he still had shoulder pain today but was driving again.

The property damage is estimated at around 60,000 euros.

The measure of the driver's license being withdrawn was “not a punishment of personal guilt,” said the judge, “but pure protection against danger”.

It is not at the discretion of the court.

According to the law, the offense requires the driver's license to be withdrawn, said Wolf.

"Unauthorized street races are one of the most dangerous crimes."

The 21-year-old spoke of something stupid.

He stepped on the accelerator and lost control, he said.
