Berlin (dpa) - The Berlin Animal Welfare Association wants to apply for the 7500 euro corona aid that the Federal Environment Ministry has promised.

"We are pleased that animal welfare is not forgotten in this difficult time," said spokeswoman Annette Rost of the German Press Agency.

«We are grateful and every penny counts.

However, the money for houses as large as our animal shelter is only a drop in the ocean, ”said Rost.

The operation of the animal shelter therefore costs around eleven million euros per year - around 23,000 euros per day.

In the Corona period, there was a lack of income due to failed events.

"In addition, the hygiene measures cost a lot of money," said Rost.

The many sick puppies from illegal trade that owners have delivered to the home are also a major cost factor at the moment.

"For owners, the treatment costs at veterinarians go up over their heads," says Rost.

The animal shelter does not receive any government subsidies, but is mainly financed from bequests and donations.

According to the spokeswoman, only the animal collection point is publicly funded.

Animal shelters affected by the pandemic can apply for federal financial aid from Saturday.

As the Federal Environment Ministry announced, all animal welfare associations that run animal shelters can then apply for a one-time operating subsidy of 7500 euros.

The funding is intended to cushion the consequences of the corona pandemic for animal shelters.

In December 2020, the Bundestag decided to subsidize the animal shelters.

In order to improve the situation in the animal shelters and ensure animal welfare, funds of five million euros have been earmarked in the 2021 budget of the Federal Environment Ministry.

The funding guidelines required for payment have now come into force.
