03 October 2017 The European Court of Human Rights sentenced Russia to pay compensation to Russian journalist Elena Milascina of the newspaper "Novaya gazeta", Anna Politkovskaya's newspaper, for a series of publications concerning the dramatic story of the sinking of the submarine “Kursk” occurred on August 12, 2000. 118 Russian submariners died in the tragedy.



The journalist, in the two articles signed by her, had stated that the report on the death of Russian submariners gave the Russian Navy officers the possibility of avoiding responsibility for the failure to rescue the crew members still alive in the hull. . 



The Russian Defense Ministry accused the journalist of defamation, winning the case against the journalist in a Moscow court.



Now, however, the European Court of Human Rights has overturned the sentence considering that the Russian court, condemning the “Novaya gazeta”, has violated the freedom of expression of its journalist. 



Now the Russian government will have to pay the reporter a total of 5 thousand 500 euros, of which 2 thousand 500 for compensation for material damage and another 3 thousand to cover non-material expenses and legal expenses.
