Potsdam (dpa / bb) - The Brandenburg police recorded almost 2000 speed violations within twelve hours during the Europe-wide “Speed Marathon” traffic action day on Wednesday.

On the federal highway 87 shortly before Luckau (Dahme-Spreewald district) there was about a speeder traveling 107 kilometers per hour - a maximum of 70 were allowed there, as a police spokesman announced on Wednesday.

The so-called speed marathon, which is supposed to draw attention to the dangers and consequences of driving too fast, should last until the end of the day.

The first results related to the period from midnight to noon.

According to the spokesman, there were speed controls in 70 places in Brandenburg.

Previously announced controls were inside and outside of built-up areas, on district, state and federal highways as well as on motorways. Police officers also wanted to watch out for speeders in front of critical points such as schools, daycare centers and retirement homes. The police spokesman reported that emergency services had stopped a driver in Vetschau (Oberspreewald-Lausitz district) who was traveling more than 20 kilometers per hour in front of a school. In Schönborn (Elbe-Elster district), the police stopped a driver who was under the influence of drugs: a quick test confirmed the consumption of amphetamines, according to Twitter.

The European traffic police network “ROADPOL” coordinates the “Speed Marathon”.

29 states took part, according to the network.

The aim is to reduce the number of accident victims on the streets.

In Germany, according to the organizers, all federal states took part, but only in about ten is it a so-called special mission, in which tests are carried out beyond the normal range.
