Stahlbrode (dpa / mv) - After the fatal ship accident near Stahlbrode (Western Pomerania-Rügen), the water police are examining the exact cause of the accident.

A spokesman for the authority said on Wednesday in Rostock.

In the Strelasund between the island of Rügen and the mainland, a 58-meter-long ferry rammed a small rubber dinghy around Tuesday afternoon, fatally injuring the angler.

It is still unclear whether the angler was illegally in the fairway and why the crew of the ferry did not notice the angler in time, said the authority's spokesman. The ferry, which has space for 45 vehicles and is twelve meters wide, was on a transfer trip from a shipyard and wanted to go to the ferry terminal in Stahlbrode. During the impact, the 74-year-old angler from the Neubrandenburg region had one arm severed.

The crew of a buoy-laying machine that was just nearby hid the casualty.

Although the injured party was taken care of by rescue workers in a helicopter, he still died at the scene of the accident.

The remains of the dinghy were recovered.

The ferry was examined after the accident and has since been reopened for operation.

The line operation between Stahlbrode on the mainland and Glewitz on Rügen is currently suspended, as it was called by the White Fleet.
