Cologne (dpa) - The Bundesliga soccer club 1. FC Köln, threatened with relegation, is concerned with a return of Peter Stöger as a coach, according to information from "Sport Bild".

The 54-year-old had already worked for the club from 2013 to the end of 2017 and was promoted from the 2nd Bundesliga to the first division during this time.

Stöger has been working at FK Austria Wien since August 2019, but recently announced his departure at the end of the season.

"It's about different framework conditions" and strategies in the club, said Stöger about the reasons not to extend his expiring contract.

"There are a few things that led to this decision."

In August 2019 he took over the post of sports director at the capital club and was also head coach for the Viennese for the third time before this season.

In Germany, the Austrian had coached 1. FC Köln and Borussia Dortmund.

The “Sport Bild” (Wednesday) writes that Stöger has signaled his readiness for both the first and the second division.

There should be a meeting with those responsible for the club shortly.

After separating from Markus Gisdol, 1. FC Köln had entrusted Friedhelm Funkel with the task of preventing relegation from the Bundesliga.

The 67-year-old wants to quit after the season.
