It's one night in January 2020. A few hours earlier, Irena and her two children had landed at Arlanda after a holiday in Cape Verde.

Irena's partner Tommy has picked up the family by car and they are now driving towards Örbyleden in southern Stockholm.

There are only minutes left until the family's life will change forever.

- The last memory of what we talked about was that we would get married this autumn.

We sat in the car and planned the wedding with the children, says Irena.

Suspected of 221 crimes in four years

A few kilometers away, the police are chasing a stolen Audi.

They do not yet know that the man behind the wheel is 20-year-old "Hassan", a notorious car thief who has been in many car chases before.

The first time Assignment Review told about "Hassan" was in September 2019. By then, he had been suspected of 221 crimes in four years.

At the interview, he was convicted of robbery, theft and receiving and told from inside the prison that he has criminal values that a prison sentence can not change.

- It's not like you're put to other thoughts in here, he said then.

During his time in prison, "Hassan" has been judged to have a significant risk of relapse into crime.

Despite this, he is released from prison as a conditional release as planned on October 30, 2019. The remaining 10 months of the sentence will be served in prison.

Continues to commit crimes

During the conditional release, "Hassan" continues to commit several crimes.

Twice he is stopped by the police and confesses to gross illegal driving.

But he is not detained because the crime cannot result in one year in prison, which is required for a person to be detained.

On the night of 14 January 2020, the police set up a traffic control in south-eastern Stockholm.

Nearby is a hidden police patrol to check on those who choose to avoid the check.

They become suspicious when an Audi turns off.

Through the registration number, they see that the car has been stolen and follow, but "Hassan" pulls away.

Assignment review meets "Hassan" at Kumlaanstalten.

Three minutes later, "Hassan" drives into Irena's and Tommy's car in what the police investigation will then show is a speed of 180 kilometers per hour.

- We were just about to cross Örbyleden when he comes driving, says Irena.

Irena is seriously injured in the collision and loses consciousness.

Her son, who is sitting in the back seat, is also injured.

Her partner Tommy dies, only 47 years old.

- I have this hatred and sadness in me over how our life was totally destroyed.

I struggle to feel that I do not really want to feel hatred.

I want to be able to let go of this and move on, says Irena.

“I understand the hatred”

"Hassan" is convicted of grossly causing another person's death and grossly causing bodily harm.

In addition, aggravated theft, illegal use, gross negligence in traffic and three cases of illegal driving.

The sentence is imprisonment for three years and three months.

The conditional release is forfeited and another 10 months are added to the sentence.

Assignment review now meets him at Kumla Institution, one of Sweden's safest prisons.

- I regret the incident a lot.

But I keep my feelings to myself.

I understand the hatred, if it had happened to me or someone I know I would probably have felt exactly the same.

I do not know what to say, I can not get anything undone.

I wish it was possible, but it is not possible, he says.

“Two different realities”

"Hassan" says that today he is thinking about changing his life, that he read primary school in prison and is now in high school.

There are probably many who live ordinary, honest lives who wonder "but why can you not just feel that no now it must end with committing crime?"

- I can explain it this simple: If you take such a person, an ordinary Swede today, and say "today you are going to rob a Forex."

Not many would consider doing so.

It is completely impossible for them to see that reality.

It is just as impossible and difficult for me to see how I should function in ordinary life.

Because we live in two different realities.

Want a change

The last thing "Hassan" says is that he wants to greet Irena that he has regrets.

- It does not help me today with his remorse.

You can not do anything and then regret it afterwards, says Irena.

At the same time, she hopes that the traffic accident can mean a change in "Hassan's" life.

- As a mother, my heart cries somewhere to see what he has done.

While I would like to hate him, but I can not.

I just see that there are so many pieces where people around him have not seen his cry for help.

"Hassan" is actually called something else.

The report "Conditionally released" can be seen on SVT Play.
