The transitional council which took power in Chad after the death of Idriss Déby Itno is headed by one of the sons of the late president, Lieutenant General
Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno
. At the age of 37, he became head of state and supreme head of the armed forces. Until now, he was the head of the famous DGSSEI, a sort of presidential guard, the elite body of the army. At his side, fourteen military leaders, some of whom are among the most influential of recent years.
They are mainly generals from the north and from
Idriss Déby Itno's
clan
and who have always constituted the base of his power: the Chief of Staff and General of the Armies Abakar Abdelkerim Daoud, the Director General of Military Intelligence Tahir Erda Taïro, without forgetting the ministers of Public Security, Territorial Administration or even that of the Armies, all Chadian high-ranking officers.
Requests for a return to constitutional order
Officially, therefore, the army took matters into their own hands without any problem.
But sources in Ndjamena speak of tensions within the inner circle of power, especially over the sharing of power within the new council.
Another problem: this transitional military council has granted itself full powers, which is nowhere provided for in the revised Constitution of December 2020, denounce civil society, the opposition, as well as parties from the presidential majority. . All are asking for a return to constitutional order, while the support of this council justifies its establishment by security imperatives.
In the meantime, the new Chadian power has already announced a series of very strict measures: the dissolution of the government and the National Assembly, a curfew from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m., a closure of the borders.
Above all, he suspends the Constitution and announces that he will assume an 18-month transition, while promising free and democratic elections.
Measures that are far from unanimous in Chad.
