Montreux / Munich (dpa) - Karl-Heinz Rummenigge wants to be a mediator between the European Football Union and the twelve Super League clubs after his comeback on the UEFA Executive Committee.

"I was and am a friend of dialogue and would like to try to mediate as a mediator between UEFA and the twelve breakaway clubs," said the CEO of FC Bayern in a statement on Tuesday.

The 65-year-old had previously been acclaimed as a representative of the European Club Association ECA at the UEFA Congress in Montreux on the association's important committee.

Rummenigge was a member of the UEFA executive from 2016 to 2017.

UEFA and FC Bayern are opposing the attempt by twelve top teams from England, Italy and Spain to install an elite league as a competition to the Champions League.

Rummenigge actually wanted to end his career as a functionary after his Bayern contract expired at the end of 2021.

"It was no longer part of my life plans to become a member of the UEFA executive again," he said.

However, he was able to be personally asked for help by many ECA teams and UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin.

"I love football and I also feel responsible, so it goes without saying that I will help European club football and UEFA to maintain our competitive structures in Europe," he said.
