Hamburg (dpa / lno) - Tourism in Hamburg is still on the ground because of the corona pandemic.

In the first two months, only 105,000 overnight guests came to the Hanseatic city, 90 percent fewer than a year earlier.

The North Statistics Office announced on Tuesday in Kiel.

Hospitality and tourism are among the industries hardest hit by lockdowns to contain the pandemic.

In Germany's second largest city, tourism is the second most important economic factor after the port industry.

For this reason, among other things, Hamburg's economic output slumped at an above-average rate in the national comparison with a minus of 5.8 percent.

The corona crisis began in March 2020.

The number of overnight stays in Hamburg in January and February fell by a good 85 percent to 292,500;

42,500 of these were guests from abroad (minus 90 percent).

Overnight stays in hotels or guest houses for purely tourist purposes are not permitted due to the pandemic.
