Stuttgart (AP) - Laura Siegemund and Anna-Lena Friedsam have moved into the second round of the tennis tournament in Stuttgart.

The Schwäbin Siegemund prevailed on Tuesday against the Neumünsteran Mona Barthel 6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 1.

In the round of 16 on Wednesday (not before 6.30 p.m.), the 2017 tournament winner will meet world number one Ashleigh Barty from Australia.

Friedsam won the first round duel between two qualifiers against the Norwegian Ulrikke Eikeri 6: 2, 6: 0.

The 27-year-old from Andernach is now facing Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus or the Chinese Zhang Shuai.

Julia Middendorf, on the other hand, said goodbye as the next German tennis player in the first round.

The 18-year-old from Cloppenburg lost against the clearly favored Estonian Anett Kontaveit with 2: 6, 3: 6.

Middendorf had only secured a place in the main field of the top-ranked event through qualification and made her debut at a WTA tournament.
