The report said that Putin warmly congratulated Diaz-Canel on his election to the post of first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, as well as "on the birthday of the Cuban leader today" and conveyed friendly greetings to Raul Castro.

The parties reaffirmed their mutual disposition to comprehensively strengthen the strategic partnership between Russia and Cuba.

The Presidents stressed the importance of joint work on the implementation of agreed projects in trade, economic and other areas.

"They expressed readiness to coordinate efforts to combat the spread of coronavirus infection," the Kremlin said.

The parties also agreed to intensify the Russian-Cuban dialogue in various formats.

On April 16, the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, General Raul Castro, announced that he was leaving the post of party leader.

Diaz-Canel was elected first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party.
