Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The funding pots launched last summer by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for equipping teachers and students with digital devices are almost exhausted.

The North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Education announced in Düsseldorf on Tuesday that more than 96 percent of the total of 263 million euros promised had already been applied for.

The state government had launched the programs to equip all teachers and those students who do not have a digital device because of the corona pandemic.

The aim was to support the schools in designing distance and alternating lessons.

By April 1st, the NRW school authorities, i.e. municipalities and private organizations, have applied for a good 341 million euros from the federal digital school pact, which is worth a billion euros. From the funding program for investments in the digital infrastructure of schools, which is co-financed by the federal states, North Rhine-Westphalia will have a total of 1.054 billion euros available until 2024. The school authorities can apply for funds until the end of the year. VR glasses for learning how to operate machines or interactive boards in schools are eligible for funding in vocational training.

"In order to enable up-to-date education, we support the school authorities with the digitization of the schools with considerable financial means," explained NRW School Minister Yvonne Gebauer (FDP).

"I am pleased that the municipalities are making increasing use of this offer."
