Delmenhorst (dpa) - After the death of a 19-year-old after a police operation in Delmenhorst, the family's lawyer asked for a complete explanation.

"Death occurred as a result of a lack of oxygen-related shock," said the family lawyer, Lea Voigt.

The autopsy report may not be able to clarify where the lack of oxygen came from.

It is the job of the police and the public prosecutor to clarify the many open questions, such as: "Running, panic, restraint, pepper spray, prone position - how did these factors work?"

Voigt criticized the fact that the police and emergency services spoke directly and publicly of an accident, although the background was completely unclear.

"This suggests a certain attitude, a lack of error culture and an interest in clarification."

The police checked the 19-year-old on March 5 in Delmenhorst for possible drug use.

There was an argument in which the officers used pepper spray.

The 19-year-old collapsed later in the detention cell.

He died in the hospital a day later.

The 19-year-old's family has filed criminal charges against all police officers and rescue workers involved in the operation for all possible offenses.

The public prosecutor's office is investigating suspicions of negligent homicide and failure to provide assistance.

Accordingly, so far there have been no reliable indications that the young man's death was caused by someone else.
