In Germany, the crisis in the conservative camp around Angela Merkel 's succession is about to be resolved.

The leadership of the German Christian Democratic Party CDU renewed its support on Monday evening for Armin Laschet, president of the conservative party, in an internal vote.

The CDU executive committee, after more than six hours of meeting, voted in favor of the candidacy of its president against that of the popular Bavarian leader Markus Söder.

The latter had indicated during the day that he would comply with the decision of this body.

Markus Söder's offensive

The plebiscite is clear and portends an outcome to the fratricidal duel that has been tearing the party in power for a week: 77.5% of party officials voted in favor of Armin Laschet against 22.5% for Markus Söder, in this consultation organized by Internet in an impromptu way, after marathon discussions. Natural candidate of the CDU of which he took the head in January, Armin Laschet, supporter of continuity with the centrist cap of Angela Merkel, had seen his nomination contested by Markus Söder, leader of the Bavarian party-brother CSU.

After months of maintaining suspense about his intentions, Söder had increased the tension by formalizing his candidacy on April 11.

The next day, Laschet had obtained a first vote of support from the CDU caciques.

The body which ruled in its favor on Monday evening brings together an even larger sample of party officials.

Legislative elections on September 26

The outcome of this crisis meeting was highly uncertain as Markus Söder has garnered the support of several party officials in recent days.

The Bavarian minister-president had a strong argument: he is by far the favorite in the polls to allow the Conservatives to keep the chancellery after the parliamentary elections of September 26.

But the party leaders ultimately did not want to take any risks.

Disavowing Armin Laschet, installed at the head of the CDU for three months, would have plunged into a lasting crisis the majority party, in power for 16 years.
