After the CDU board vote for party leader Armin Laschet as candidate for chancellor, CSU leader Markus Söder wants to comment on this at noon.

At 1 p.m., according to the CSU, he wants to make a statement on the sidelines of a parliamentary group meeting in the Bavarian state parliament.

CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt indicated according to WELT information that Söder would accept the vote.

"The process was bumpy, but the result was clear," said Dobrindt at a meeting of the group's executive committee.

Before that, the CDU board had spoken out in favor of Laschet in a special digital meeting after a long discussion.

31 out of 46 voting board members voted in a secret ballot for their own party chairman, who was the candidate for chancellor.

9 voted for Söder, 6 abstained.

This means that the power struggle for the Union's candidacy for chancellor is likely to be decided because the CSU had previously placed this question in the hands of the CDU.

The CDU is now making this “sovereign” decision, Söder declared on Monday in Munich.

"We as the CSU and I also respect every decision." But whether this also applies to the Union faction in the Bundestag and the Laschet critics at the CDU base is unclear.

A meeting of the group is planned for Tuesday afternoon.
