SERIELAND RECO - At the moment, teachers are everywhere on our screens. This is particularly the case in the series "A Teacher", which will be released soon on Canal +. It centers on the forbidden relationship between an English teacher and her student. "Sam", "The replacement" or even "The school of life", broadcast from April 21 on France 2, have also chosen to stage teachers facing the difficulties of teaching. How do the series deal with teacher-student relationships? Is the vision of teaching in the series realistic? Eva Roque answers these questions in the company of Constance Jamet, journalist specializing in series for the newspaper "Le Figaro" and Elodie Pinel, professor of French and philosophy, passionate about fiction.

We all keep in mind a teacher who marked our schooling! Because he or she reconciled us with math, made us hate chemistry, inspired like Robin Williams in The Circle of Missing Poets or made us blush like Claire Wilson, the alluring English teacher from

A Teacher

,

the new Canal series. +. Many series feature interactions between students and teachers, as evidenced by the recent release of The

Substitute

with Joey Starr on TF1 or even of

The School of Life

,

on France 2. Are these fictions realistic? How do the series account for the difficulties of the French school system?

In this episode of SERIELAND, Eva Roque deciphers the series that evoke the relationships between teachers and their students.

She surrounds herself with Constance Jamet, journalist specializing in series for

Le Figaro

and Elodie Pinel, professor of French and philosophy, passionate about cinema and series.

Recce of the week:

A Teacher

A Teacher

,

the new American series from Canal + available from April 22, features the intimate and ambiguous relationship between Claire Wilson, an English teacher and her student Eric Walker, a 17-year-old teenager.

This dramatic thriller is portrayed by Kate Mara (House of Cards) as Claire Wilson and Nick Robinson (Love, Victor) as Eric.

In

A Teacher

,

the tension is palpable and the storytelling is dense.

The series avoids sinking into a Manichean vision: the relations of domination between this teacher and her pupil are complex, just like the psychology of the characters.

A Teacher lets viewers make up their own minds about this relationship without being judgmental.

The backstage column:

Breaking Bad

The cult series Breaking Bad, created in 2008, tells the story of Walter White, a chemistry professor who, after learning that he has an incurable cancer, embarks on the production of crystal meth, to put his family sheltered from want.

On screen, the steps in the manufacture of the drug seem realistic, yet the creator of the series has been careful to muddy the waters so that viewers cannot create this illicit substance at home….

5 seasons, 62 episodes of 45 minutes to watch on Netflix

Mo

i, Christiane F

Me, Christiane F

tells the story of the descent into hell of a teenager in West Berlin in the 1970s. Christiane, 13, gradually sinks into the cycle of drugs.

This will lead her to prostitution.

Adapted from the book by Christiane Felscherinow, Moi, Christiane F., 13 years old, drug addict, prostitute…, the series depicts the course of the teenager's various encounters and the fury of living of these adrift young people.

While the series is set in a divided Germany, it never makes a direct reference to the Berlin Wall, which gives Christiane F a timeless character accentuated by the very current soundtrack (Sia, Christine and the Queen).

The aesthetics of the series are very neat especially when the young people take drugs and escape into artificial paradises.

1 season, 8 episodes of 50 minutes to watch on Amazon Prime Video

The guest: Elodie Pinel

Elodie Pinel has a doctorate in French literature, professor of French and philosophy in a high school in Ile de France.

She loves cinema and series and uses fiction a lot as a medium for her lessons.

The guest's recommendation:

Skam France

Skam

follows the daily life of a group of high school students in the 11th arrondissement of Paris.

Love, alcohol, schooling, sexuality, religion and violence… The series addresses all the questions and upheavals of young adolescents.

Each season is centered on a character.

Very realistic, it resonates with the concerns of young viewers and avoids clichés about adolescence.

Educational, the episodes of

Skam

also deal with complex issues such as online harassment, the question of gender or denial of pregnancy.

In addition to the episodes, the platform had the good idea to broadcast very regularly, at unpredictable hours, small video clips on which fans flock.

The actor who plays Lucas, Axel Auriant came to talk to us about the teen series in SERIELAND.
