Sudan confirmed yesterday its firm position on the necessity of reaching a binding agreement before the second filling of the Renaissance Dam that Ethiopia is building on the Blue Nile.

This came during a meeting held by Foreign Minister Maryam Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi, with the ambassadors of African Union member states accredited to Khartoum yesterday afternoon, in which Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Yasser Abbas participated.

The Minister gave a detailed explanation of the outcomes of the Renaissance Dam negotiations that took place recently in Kinshasa, explaining Sudan's firm position on the need to reach a binding agreement before proceeding with the second filling of the dam from the Ethiopian side.

She looked forward to supporting African countries to reach comprehensive solutions that are satisfactory to all parties.

For his part, the Minister of Irrigation stated that Sudan submitted the proposal of the Quartet mediation in order to reach an urgent agreement.

Meanwhile, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed confirmed that the second filling of the Renaissance Dam will take place during the rainy season in July and August.

He wrote on his official account on Twitter: "The following filling will take place during the heavy rains in July and August," indicating that this will prevent floods in Sudan.

This comes after the failure of a round of negotiations held in Kinshasa earlier this month with the participation of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia.

Cairo and Khartoum accused Addis Ababa of obstinacy and thwarting the negotiations.

Egypt and Sudan are calling for the participation of a quadripartite international mediation mechanism that includes the African Union, the European Union, the United States and the United Nations in the stalled negotiations on the Renaissance Dam, which is rejected by Ethiopia.
