Egestorf (dpa) - Local is in: Hand-distilled gin and home-brewed beer - the small regional companies are on the rise around the Lüneburg Heath.

"My gin goes through the roof, I burn at night," says Gerhard Bosselmann from Egestorf.

The Christmas edition is already stored in special small barrels, on the wall of the small distillery hangs the certificate of an international championship of gin distillers, which he completed a month ago as the proud second in England.

"It's so much fun that a lot of people who have flown to Mallorca for years are now discovering the heath," says the 65-year-old farmer.

In his main job he still takes care of his bakeries in Hanover.

Since Corona it has become clear that many young people are building their livelihoods in the heath and a new form of gentle tourism is emerging.

“A young network is growing there,” emphasizes Bosselmann.

Even with hobby brewer Kai Beitzer - in normal day-to-day work in shifts as a team master in the Port of Hamburg - day trippers stand in line in front of the garage on Friday and Saturday.

His Fuhrenbräu - light cellar and bock beer - is stored for a thousand hours in the 750-liter tank, and it can only be kept cool for four weeks.

«I brew every 14 days and can hardly keep up.

People have more time to take care of the local area, ”says the 53-year-old.
