Berlin (dpa) - In the internal union power struggle for the candidacy for chancellor, the young party, the Young Union (JU), stands with a large majority behind the CSU chairman Markus Söder.

In a video conference of the state chairmen on Sunday evening, according to JU, 14 state associations spoke out in favor of Söder with a clear majority.

Baden-Württemberg and Schleswig-Holstein as medium-sized associations, as well as Brandenburg, reported a “mixed mood”.

The Young Union of North Rhine-Westphalia, which provides more than a quarter of all JU members, spoke out in favor of CDU boss Armin Laschet as a candidate for chancellor.

The JU has 18 regional associations.

"We are firmly convinced that we have two very successful Prime Ministers to choose from, who can both be Chancellors," said JU Federal Chairman Tilman Kuban, demanding: "Both must finally live up to their responsibility for the Union."

“The two candidates had enough time to come to a decision.

This did not happen and now we are forced to position ourselves.

This was done with a clear majority for Markus Söder, »said Kuban.

"The dice now have to be cast quickly in the joint talks and then we go into the election campaign together, because the opponent is outside the Union," said Kuban.

Only together as a Union will one win the election.

“I can only remind the two party leaders that they have a responsibility for the unity of the Union.

This responsibility is of historic proportions and must take second place to personal ambition, ”warned the JU chairman.
