The state chairman of the police union (GdP), Jens Mohrherr, has called for harsher penalties for attacks on police officers.

“Let's take the riots on Opernplatz in Frankfurt last summer.

If we look at which judgments have been made according to which allegations and which sentences have come out, then that is a slap in the face for many colleagues who were there, ”he told the“ Frankfurter Rundschau ”(Monday).

He would like the judiciary to interpret the sentencing as it could be interpreted - "namely upwards".

The riots on Opernplatz occurred on the night of July 19, 2020.

Last summer, with the clubs and discos closed, the square had become an open-air party zone.

On the weekend of the incident, up to 3,500 people initially celebrated peacefully.

In the early hours of the morning, there were attacks on officers and their vehicles.

In February of this year, the first trial of the riots before the Frankfurt District Court ended with the warning of a 20-year-old.

The defendant admitted to throwing a glass bottle at police officers and then resisted arrest.

The court assumed, among other things, a serious breach of the peace, attempted dangerous bodily harm and resistance to law enforcement officers in the judgment under youth criminal law.
