AstraZeneca is seeking to develop a vaccine against the South African strain

An official at AstraZeneca in Austria said in an interview published today, Sunday, that it is possible that an upgraded version of the company's vaccine to prevent the emerging corona virus (Covid-19) intended to combat the strain that has been documented in South Africa will be ready by the end of this year.

The director of AstraZeneca in Austria, Sarah Wolters, told the Courier newspaper that the studies indicating so far that the current vaccine is less effective against the virus documented in South Africa are so small that no final conclusions can be drawn from them.

She added, "At the same time, AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford have begun modifications of the vaccine for the South African strain, and it expects it to be ready by the end of the year if needed."
