Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - A former employee of the Württemberg Tennis Association (WTB) is said to have embezzled cash and material funds amounting to more than one million euros over a period of at least 17 years.

The association filed a criminal complaint against the person in question with the Stuttgart public prosecutor's office on April 8, as it announced on its website.

A spokeswoman for the public prosecutor's office confirmed the receipt of the report on Wednesday on dpa request.

The auditing company commissioned with the preparation of the annual financial statements for the 2020 financial year found “considerable irregularities in the accounting and cash management of the WTB” on March 15, the association announced.

A law firm was then called in and an investigation started.

"In the period from 2014 to 2020 alone, embezzlement of cash in the amount of around 700,000 euros and misappropriation of material assets to the value of around 100,000 euros have been ascertained," wrote the association.

“In addition, there are concrete indications that the former employee withdrew additional cash from the WTB by creating a black box.

In this respect, the exact extent is currently not known. "

The acts of embezzlement were "facilitated by processes created by the WTB itself," it said.

“In particular, the protective mechanisms provided for in associations have failed for years.

The former employee was therefore able to conceal the cash withdrawals for at least 17 years by means of non-transparent and unlawful bookkeeping ».
