More money is needed to meet the consequences of the pandemic in the Swedish school.

This is the opinion of the government, the Center Parties and the Liberals, who want to see support of an additional SEK 350 million.

The money, which is included in the spring change budget, is proposed to finance, among other things, teaching support and a law school.

Åsa Fahlén, chairman of the National Union of Teachers, does not think that an extra 350 million is enough.

- It is clear that all money that goes to trying to make up, or help compensate for the loss of knowledge that has occurred, is of course welcome.

But efforts will be needed, not only in this budget, but for a long time to come.

The same tone can be found in the Swedish Teachers' Association and its chairman Johanna Jaara Åstrand.

- It is clear that every single kroner that you invest in the school is well invested, but it is far from enough.

In fact, this corresponds to only two percent of the needs that we see that Swedish schools need.

Want to see billions more

The teachers' union estimates that the school will need between 16 and 21 billion this year alone.

- Partly to cover the large cuts that have affected the school for several years, but also to take care of the extra needs that arose during the pandemic year, says Johanna Jaara Åstrand.

The National Union of Teachers, with the help of teachers, calculated the value of the loss of knowledge during the spring term 2020. The sum: Approximately five billion kronor.

- It was then from March to mid-June last year.

Now we have another full academic year behind us, so these are large sums, says Åsa Fahlén.

SKR: Good that the schools can decide

Sweden's municipalities and regions (SKR) think it is good that the money should be general, ie that the schools and municipalities can decide over it.

This is what Mats Gerdau, chairman of SKR's committee for educational issues, says.

How should the money be used in practice?

- It will probably be a little different from school to school and from municipality to municipality.

Mostly I think it will go to the salary of teachers and school curators for more teaching and more psychosocial support, says Mats Gerdau, who on a daily basis is the murderer's municipal board chairman in Nacka municipality.

SVT Nyheter has also sought the National Agency for Education for a comment, which refrains from commenting on the proposal at present.
