German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US President Joe Biden spoke on the phone about the situation in Afghanistan and the withdrawal of NATO troops.

This was reported by the press office of the German government in a statement.



The two leaders "underlined the importance of close coordination and continued political commitment for the country", reads the note.



Another theme of the interview - the statement reports - was the latest developments in eastern Ukraine.

"The chancellor and the president have agreed on the request to be made to Russia to reduce its recent troop upgrades, in order to obtain a de-escalation of the situation" in the area.



In addition, Merkel and Biden exchanged views on the Covid-19 pandemic and stressed "the importance of global and equitable access to vaccines" for which they both intend to commit.
