Düsseldorf (AP) - The North Rhine-Westphalian Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) has sharply criticized the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU).

"It makes me stunned that you explain something on Sunday that you don't want to know about on Monday," said Reul to the "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger" (Thursday).

Söder had said that he would only be available as a candidate for chancellor of the Union if the CDU also gave him broad support.

"The Union has always distinguished itself by following its basic convictions and not fluctuating moods," said Reul.

"If we had only listened to opinion polls, we would not have been able to make some unpleasant decisions in the pandemic."

The NRW Prime Minister and CDU Chairman Armin Laschet (CDU) and CSU boss Söder both want to become the Union's candidate for chancellor.

Söder relies on his better poll numbers.
