Geeste (dpa / lni) - The museums in Lower Saxony and Bremen see themselves emerging stronger from the corona pandemic.

Last summer in particular, the facilities experienced great demand from the public, said the managing director of the Lower Saxony and Bremen Museums Association, Hans Lochmann, after the association conference in Geeste in Emsland.

"There was a catch-up of visits, which is also an outlook for the future," said Lochmann.

The around 700 museums in Lower Saxony and 30 museums in Bremen used the time for a digitization boost and got through the Corona year well despite the drop in visitor numbers.

The association also supported them in this.

"You have been able to prepare for the future so that you can also reach your audience digitally in the future," said Lochmann.

However, a lot of political lobbying was necessary.

There, especially at the beginning of the pandemic, the prevailing opinion was that museums and culture were just "nice to have", a leisure activity.

"We first had to convey that there is also educational work in museums."

It has now become clear that museums are also an important meeting point and gathering place for people.

It is foreseeable that politics will have to save after the high Corona expenditure, said Lochmann.

"We will have to expect cuts, but we hope that it has become clear that culture still needs public funding."
